Organization Description: PEER is a non-profit, national environmental watchdog organization whose mission is to protect public employees who protect the environment by assisting and advocating on behalf of public employees in government pollution control and resource management agencies. Because government scientists, lawyers, regulators, law enforcement officials, engineers, land and wildlife managers, etc. are on the front lines of environmental protection, yet often work in politically-driven agencies where there is little tolerance for dissent, PEER helps environmentally ethical public employees police their agencies, expose and challenge bad decision-making, and work for reform.
Job Responsibilities: PEER legal interns/externs receive exposure to diverse areas of environmental law and gain experience and skills in whistleblower litigation, administrative legal challenges, environmental advocacy and media and communications work. Responsibilities include drafting legal complaints and briefs, Freedom of Information Act requests and appeals, administrative filings and petitions, legal memoranda, and press releases; editing employee-authored reports and exposes; participation in client intake and litigation strategy meetings; and legal and other research.
Qualifications: PEER is looking for talented, self-starting 1Ls, 2Ls or 3Ls with outstanding writing skills. Experience or a demonstrated interest in environmental issues preferred.

Communications/Web Outreach Intern
Description: He/she will be exposed to the inner workings of a national organization while gaining a wide range of experience within a small office setting. Working closely with PEER’s Director of Online Communications, the intern will be exposed to a variety of environmental issues on the federal and state level. He/she will have an opportunity to handle media relations, write and edit online publications, design web pages, assist with the implementation of PEER’s e-strategy, manage list servs, and update the membership database.
Time/Length of Internship: As this internship is unpaid, PEER recognizes that interns may need to find a temporary job in Washington, DC. To accommodate the intern, the hours and days are flexible to meet the financial needs of the individual(s).
Qualifications: 1) Strong writing skills and ability to work independently; 2) basic computer and web understanding; and 3) familiarity with spread sheets and basic data processing. Experience with Dreamweaver and/or HTML is a plus.
Setting: We offer a fast paced, friendly and working environment in a small office setting near Dupont Circle Metro. This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience within a dynamic environmental nonprofit organization.
