Protect Scientists and Scientific Integrity

Ask your Congress member to stop the political attack on science by supporting the "Restore Scientific Integrity to Federal Research and Policy Making Act."

Federal scientists working on critical issues affecting public health and protection of natural resources are facing increasing political pressure by Bush administration officials to alter or suppress accurate but politically inconvenient findings.  Currently, the practice of "good science" is not recognized as protected activity under the federal Whistleblower Protection Act.

Surveys of scientist in agencies such as the Fish & Wildlife Service and NOAA demonstrate that political interference has reached intolerable levels. Stifling the science in these agencies deprives us of the information we need to know about our changing environment.

Please support the 'Restore Scientific Integrity to Federal Research and Policy Making Act' (H.R. 839, Waxman and S.1358, Durbin) so that--

* Scientists will no longer be muzzled;
* Federal employees who report incidents of political interference with science would no longer fear retaliation; and
* Vital information ranging from the state of our planet to the effects of chemicals on cell structure would be available to the public and the Congress.

Your active support of legislation that protects federal scientists from suppression of data, political manipulation of reports and harassment will be invaluable not only for the scientific community, but for the health of the human population and preservation of the natural world.
